Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role within BAE Systems is to bend pipework to desired shapes, angles and specifications by using technical data input into a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) bending machine. The role also has me problem solving by working with template wires and many manual lifting tasks such as loading pipes into the machine and changing tooling on the bend machine for different size and radius of pipework. I enjoy my job because it is interesting, constantly active and rewarding.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme because it is a role that involves a lot of maths and technical thinking, along with problem solving and being constantly active which helps me be productive, focused and engaged.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills, such as how to fabricate pipework to isometric drawings, how to bend pipework using CNC machines, how to create template wires, how to install pipework onto a submarine, how to weld, how to flare pipework and how to braze pipe fittings. During my apprenticeship I have developed my skills of communicating, teamwork and using my experiences to teach others.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme has a good structure by giving apprentices a year of practical and theory at the local college and then slowly implementing their transition to site in a way that feels calm and ready so that they can adjust to their working life and learn hands on skills on site.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The range of support is fantastic, whether it be regarding mental health, alcohol problems or general queries, the business makes sure to put its employees concerns first and help guide them to a solution to solve the issue.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Plenty of support, training providers are only a phone call away and have lots of experience which means that they can guide apprentices in the right direction and give support to help them succeed in gaining their qualifications. My quarterly reviews helped to keep my training provider up to date if any support was required.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I have developed the skills and knowledge necessary to perform to the highest standard possible for my role in the business, this means that i can produce work to the required specifications and can pass on my skills and knowledge onto others so that they and the company can succeed.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes lots, for example, the work experience programmes where students come on site for an experience of a working environment. The women in engineering programme, which helps to encourage more female workers into a male dominated environment. The bendrigg trust which involves volunteering to lend a hand helping individuals with special needs to develop life skills during an activity week.
