Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is to understand the discipline of an Electrical Designer around the business within the Barrow site. I get moved onto different placements/areas throughout my apprenticeship and I get to experience different ways in which electrical design is used and produced. Day to day I am learning from colleagues and collecting evidence for my EPA. This can range from going into a training environment within a CAD software or being given real jobs to work out alongside experienced colleagues who can teach me and help me to gain the required skills and behaviours for my apprenticeship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy this programme, I find it really useful to be able to move across site and experience the different ways in which Electrical Design is used/implemented within the company. Whilst you move from placement to placement you also are able to pick up key and essential skills to get you through you apprenticeship.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learned/developed lots of different skills throughout my time within BAE for example, I have developed people skills, collaboration, IT, Maths, English, adaptability and confidence. This has come from speaking to lots of different people within the business both in person and also through business networks. Through using computer and other means of technology within my day to day job. I have also been able to work on my confidence by taking myself out of comfort zone and pushing myself to develop in new ways by taking on lots of different opportunities.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I think the programme is well structured, we first went to learn about some key subjects within college to gain our certificate to allow us to continue our apprenticeship and then we got to go into the business and expand further within the subjects. We also get to come into the business and experience/learn the way of work whilst gaining good knowledge and skills.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The support you receive is immense, there are so many means to which they will support you. The things they can support you with range from flexible hours, councils, support groups. for example, drug and alcohol, moving within the area, mental health etc. There are so many things implemented into the programme to make sure you are alright and there is always someone to be able to go to if needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There is a lot of support available and provided throughout. In college we were given a contact for BAE who was always on site if you needed anything. On site you are assigned a skills coach which is someone who is there to make sure you are alright and are gaining the right skills/knowledge throughout your apprenticeship but also someone to check in on you and have regular meetings with to make sure everything is going well or to raise any concerns.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

i think by gaining your qualifications really helps you perform better. I believe this because by gaining your qualifications it shows that you have learnt and demonstrated the required skills and behaviours for the role you are in. You have had to go through the training and take assessments and do assignments to prove you understand. This help you then take this forward and use what you have learnt into the workplace to do your role better.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes. There are many different activities to get involved in if that was something you were interested in doing. For example, Football, Rounders, STEM/Stretch activities. There are a wide verity of things they offer and you can get stuck into. These are also great to document and put down in your EPA (End Point Assessment).

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I believe they offer great opportunities for everyone, there is so many different roles within the company as well as training and support. There is so much room for growth and for you to thrive within something you like doing. If you want to develop any skills or behaviours further all you have to do is ask.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I would say do your research, make sure you know what kind of company you are going into, what their news thing is that they are doing. This shows you are interested and are keeping update with the company's announcements.
Also, I would advice that you are show enthusiasm, ask questions and show you are willing to develop.
Furthermore, make sure to be yourself. They want to know what kind of person you are.
Finally, if you don't get in the first time, keep trying! If you feel you might not have succeeded for something you might lack, go and gain more qualifications/knowledge on the topics for a better chance next time, don't give up.
