Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Going to meetings / scrums with my team to provide updates on current work, and an outline as to what I intend to do that day. Tasks spanning the entire Software Lifecycle from requirements writing, software design, coding and reviews. There are a range of side projects to get involved with as well including writing coding standards, developing coding solutions, and getting experience in other areas through "stretch" tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I greatly enjoy my apprenticeship programme as it allows me to develop a better technical skillset completing interesting and enjoyable work. The programme is very motivating as with the work comes the acknowledgement that what I am working on contributes to a larger system that is ensuring we are at the forefront of modern technology and safety critical systems.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Learning and developing skills required at all points in the software development lifecycle but most notably the training and practice in the python and c programming languages. Aside from this, I have also learnt valuable professional skills that can be applied to all aspects of life, whether that be teamworking skills, emotional intelligence, or many, many more.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I believe that the structure of my programme is very beneficial to my development. It began with 3 months of training in the python and C programming languages, with some embedded coding and requirements training along the way. Then came three 3-month placements where I gained valuable insights and knowledge into the world of software and also the different roles within software and various business functions. Since my 3rd placement, I have been on one of our biggest ongoing projects, still learning and acquiring experience whilst being a valued member of the team.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer. Every 3 months each apprentice has a meeting with their line manager to discuss their progress and any blockers etc. There is a "door is always open" culture amongst the workforce here, which ensures that whenever support is required, someone will always be there to listen and try to assist in any way they can.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a fair amount of support from my training provider. I have virtual uni sessions once a week and then go to the campus for a week every term (every 3-4 months). The support is there should I need it along with a host of useful resources.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification teaches me a wide variety of technical skills but also professional ones. They are equally as applicable to my role. The modules covered in my course are very relevant to the tasks I carry out in the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes. There are social clubs and sports activities. We currently have fitness classes, 5-a-side football sessions, table-tennis clubs, and many more. There are also opportunities to attend networking events both internal and external.

Why?
It is an incredible place to work. A friendly workforce with an array of career opportunities and chances for progression. There are a wide variety of employee benefits and discounts etc. It is generally just a great working environment with committed individuals and great facilities.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Qualifications and experience aren't everything. Show the real you, as we hire based on lots of different factors, some of which include personality and the ability to highlight areas where personal or professional development is required.
