Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Second year involves routine shift work with On-Job-Training. Head to work and be present for team brief, daily tasks are assigned to the team members often working in pairs. Spend time completing required work for the aircraft maintenance check and an hour before shift end, you sit down to make sure you complete all paperwork and document the work carried out.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy working on aircraft that make a real impact on the world around us. Supporting the militaries air mobility capability provides good job satisfaction knowing that you are keeping the humanitarian aid operations, training operations etc all running smoothly because of the work that we get to do. The team of engineers are also very supportive.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

People skills developed with many opportunities to participate in STEM outreach. Public speaking opportunities. Hand skills have been developed after building a brief foundation in the learning environment, performing hand skills work in a live aircraft environment has significantly improved my confidence and ability to work under pressure. Training for business improvement also provided as a bonus qualification.

Very well structured with good support when transitioning through different stages from placement to placement.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support is always provided if needed, both from line manager and local managers on site. The teams you work with have very experienced members who offer lots of knowledge and expertise to support your learning.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Training provider does frequent site visits and often online progress reviews to check in on how we are doing and how we are progressing with the qualification side of the apprenticeship.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification allows us to receive lots of different maintenance exposure. We are required to work on both rotary helicopters and fixed wing aircraft meaning we get to see and learn from different types of aircraft and different skills on each platform we work on.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

STEM Events are always on offer. Networking events can be sought out for professional development.
