Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Each day the insight started at 9AM, usually starting off with a panel of employees talking about a particular subject. Panel talks were given by a diverse range of enthusiastic Amazon employees. After lunch, we split into sub-groups to complete coding tasks with an Amazon software engineer. These were of varying difficulty but our mentor was always on hand to help. The agenda was well split and we were given a good amount of comfort breaks in between.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
A lot of helpful information was provided about opportunities at Amazon, there is a vast range of things one can do as Amazon is a vast company. Through the various talks given, I gained insight into what it is like to work for Amazon. Not only are there a lot of job opportunities there are a lot of things to do in the wider community. There is also a lot of room to grow and discover what you want while you are in the organisation.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
This experience gave me a lot of insight and helped me develop my skills. I developed more interpersonal skills doing teamwork and networking within my group. I have developed my coding skills using Python, I was encouraged to try a different language. Furthermore, I have gained more confidence in my technical skills. I have also gained insight into technical interviews and how I can succeed in them too - through developing both soft and technical skills.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The atmosphere was great! You could tell from the attitude the speakers had that they enjoyed their work and working for Amazon. There is a good work-life balance and room for flexibility with work. There is a big emphasis on inclusion, growth and customer obsession. It is clear everyone is proud of the work they do and proud to work for Amazon, which was extremely refreshing! Not only are the employees obsessed with their customers, but they are also obsessed with the company they work for too!

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I enjoyed it a lot! All of the talks were very interesting - the speakers were very engaging. Additionally, they made sure to keep us engaged through activities. I gained a real insight into the range of opportunities and was encouraged to put ourselves out there, and how I can grow in order to join Amazon. During the practical sessions, I learned a lot and gained insight from an experienced professional. And I look forward to the opportunities to come after this experience too.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Amazon
I would say don't be anxious and just go for it. Amazon may be a big company but they do not want to exclude anyone. They are a diverse company that wants a diverse range of employees and is encouraging to everyone, of every background, at every step. Just be true to yourself and what you want to do. All of the employees are nice and want to help, don't be afraid to ask questions and get involved.
