Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My current role is in the Analysis and modelling team, in this role I help look after the database for the system that Control room engineers use to maintain the power system. As part of the apprenticeship I get to experience a few different teams, so before this team I was in the restoration team which looked after ensuring systems were in place in the event of a black start. Essentially for both teams I am guided through the roles they do and given experience across the team to get an overview of the work they do.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme is very challenging and in my opinion to fast to properly develop the skills and retain them, at times it can feel like you blink and you can miss something important. However despite this I have learnt a lot and have a much greater understanding of the power system which is what I wanted. I have also been given lots of additional opportunities in other areas which are very beneficial.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

The apprenticeship has taught many new skills, some which go beyond the foundation of the university course such as the health and Safety side which has been developed massively since starting. On top of this it has gone into the business side to give some foundations there, Asset management is another skill that has been developed. Then the electrical and mathematical skills have been developed massively since starting.
On top of that more soft skills such as team work and communication have been developed further through various methods.

Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Overall the structure of the programme is an adjustment to what I was used to, it is a fast paced programme and can sometimes feel like an intense few weeks and then weeks where it is less intense so overall there is a balance which works. We also have plenty of notice the majority of time for scheduled training and other elements of the programme we need to attend. For me having block study doesn't work, however this is a personal preference as I feel it doesn't allow the time needed to retain the information best.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have access to multiple avenues of support, either via the apprenticeship team, placement manager, line manager and then additional support which is provided to all employees across the group. Overall there is support there when needed and if you ask for it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The apprenticeship team at the training centre is one of the highlights of the apprenticeship, the quality of training is really good and trainers on site are experienced and the majority of the time make bring potentially boring subjects to life
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I would say about 75% of the training is relevant to my specific role, the challenging thing is that across the group there is a massive variety of roles each with their own individual needs, so would be impossible to get it perfect for everyone, however the other training helps broaden the understanding of the power system so is usually helpful in another way just not specifically of the role itself.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

As part of being an apprentice we are part of a group called Newnet at national grid which gives ample opportunities to network and attend events. There is also groups across the company which are for all sorts of other social activates. The company also pays for IET membership which also has events which we could attend
Recommendations & Advice
Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
Yes
Why?
So having a yes/no answer is not helpful as I would only recommend it to those who I think could do it. It is a tough programme and needs dedication, commitment and passion in the area to get the most out of it. Therefore I would only suggest to people who had a passion or great interest in the industry otherwise it could become a challenge for them. If they were really interested and wanted to pursue a career then it is a company with lots of opportunities in an exciting industry that has lots of rewards.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
Be prepared to be challenged and to put in a lot of work as it is not easy, there is times when the programme is really tough and you will need to dig deep to get through. Overall showcase your passion and interest in the industry and that you are dedicated, they are willing to train in areas you don't understand well so as long as you can showcase your willingness to learn. Research a lot before the interview in the specific area you are applying for a just be prepared is the best advice I could give.
