Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I split my time between in office work days based at Warwick, Aston University, and National Grid's training centre based in Eakring. While training we receive industry leading teaching regarding our future role. We also attend Aston University to get a Foundation degree in Power Systems Engineering.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

So far I have really enjoyed my programme, I feel that my apprenticeship will help me with my future role in the company as well as the wider industry.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

During my apprenticeship I have carried out many training courses at National Grid's training centre that relates to my future role and have developed my knowledge and skills regarding the Electrical Transmission industry.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

We received our programme plan approximately a year in advance so in most cases we have known beforehand what and where we are going to be. In some cases however locations and timings have not been considered to the extent they should of been.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I feel that the support I receive from National Grid is very high, I am able to contact my Line Manager at all times, as well as the Training Support Team who run regular meetings with apprentices. We also have regular progress reviews where we are able to flag anything.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

National Grid provide time and support when completing my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I believe that the qualification I am working towards relates heavily to my future role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I have attended multiple networking events held by National Grid as well as volunteering.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
Make sure to research the industry and what National Grid do as a company. Specifically what working in the control room entails, and if you are going to be comfortable working shifts in the future.
