Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

We engage in 10 months of learning both practical and theory based before going onto our OJT placements. Here we work with time served engineers to complete tasks and the relevant paperwork, just recently as an example I have been with a team of engineers doing an engine change on a C-17 Globemaster.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I very much enjoy the apprenticeship, it is hard at times with moving around OJT placements so frequently but it is rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed not only professional skills but personal skills since working for Boeing, having improved my knowledge of engineering I have also improved my hand skills as I've had a chance to apply what I've learned.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The program is well organized and runs smoothly, sometimes the transition between sites takes a while but they all do things differently and it is important to learn their practices before engaging in work to ensure compliance with local and national regulations.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The employer is supportive and offers a wide range of support for a range of situations and circumstances. The managers are always on hand to help with things and respond to queries quickly.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider holds a quarterly meeting with ourselves to ensure that we are being treat correctly and paid correctly and also to ensure we are engaging in personal development. The assessors can be difficult to work with however.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I have gained and am working towards a range of qualifications since working here, gaining a C&G L3 and an NVQ L2 within the first year, I am now on my way to completing the NVQ L3 and the Lean 1A qualifications.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We engage in networking events here at Boeing, STEM events being the main ones which are held frequently and open to anyone who wants to attend. We also do different events such as RIAT and visits to parliament to further increase our network.

Would you recommend Boeing UK to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I think this apprenticeship is a good route into the industry with a company that has much more to offer than just the apprenticeship. Clear routes for progression within the company or in the industry as a whole.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Boeing UK?

Ensure that you have a passion and a genuine interest in what you are applying for, Aviation is an amazing industry but it requires a lot of dedication and some sacrifices, but with a good mentality and investment of time there is so much to be gained.
