Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Having just started the course, we have a mixed schedule, with 3 days a week learning theory and 2 being practical metalwork and engineering experience. Daily we arrive at college and either go into theory or practical work depending on the day.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have enjoyed the vast majority of it all so far. The only thing that has dragged on is some of the theory work we have done on work place procedures and health and safety I have already completed a number of this type of course in my previous workplaces.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt a lot in a short space of time, ranging from theory of flight to jet engine construction to aviation health and safety procedures, as well as a range of new hand skills including riveting and wire locking.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Apart from an issue with regards to practical work in the beginning and procuring materials, the structure has been well managed, also including workplace specific information thats pertinent to the work we will eventually end up doing.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Our employer is in contact and available should anyone need to speak to them. We have had a visit already from our manager as well as having spent time at out future places of work.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The tutors have been very helpful and insightful so far. We still have a way to go before qualifying but I anticipate that they will do everything they can to ensure we go into the workplace competent and with the knowledge we require.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It will provide the foundation required to reskill from the more general engineering and mechanic backgrounds we have and be prepared and able to operate in an aviation environment.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Once we have finished college and integrated into our place of work, there is a plethora of other activities to take part in, as well as groups to become a part of. However, the options will become cleared once we finish at college.

Why?

The company offers many opportunities that I have not seen before, as well as being welcoming and very supportive, even at this early stage of career. The benefits the company offers are also extensive, and the work environment seems to be a great place to be.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Boeing UK?

The company will support and recognise potential in individuals. As long as you are willing to work hard, show a good level of discipline and are dependable and reliable the opportunities they can afford are difficult to pass up.
