Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work on data analysis and economic statistical production within the Office for National Statistics. To date, I have worked on both publications of the monthly Labour Market bulletin and Quarterly UK Labour Productivity. The role involves quality assurance, data supply transformation and engagement with stakeholders,
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy it very much. I really like the events that are hosted by the GES, both online and in person. These take place throughout the year and are always a pleasure to those of us who enjoy learning about the interesting work of other economists across government.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed both my coding skills and my use of platforms such as Excel to create economic models. Through engagement on civil service boards, hosting large meetings, and conducting interviews with those hopeful to join the GES, I have grown in my public speaking confidence.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is well organised. It includes day for study on Friday, which means you can balance both work and study into the week and not stress about becoming overwhelmed. There is lots of support available from both your line managers and the University of Kent.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Your employer is usually flexible with requests. Depending on which government department you are in, you can reasonably request for arrangements in your work time if you feel overwhelmed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The University of Kent is always there to support you both academically and with your mental health. You can send your tutor questions anytime in term and expect prompt responses.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The Professional Economics Qualification is tailored to working economists in government. I feel both my work and the study program have aided each other.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
-GES Shadow Board, to support the Profession.
-GES Assessor for Written and Interviews for GESDAP and student placements.
-Junior Economist newsletter contributor and leader for different months.
