Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I complete analysis that helps inform policy colleagues. I work in a statistics team, so help on analysis and creation of statistics publications. My role has also included analysis using R and Excel, economic appraisal and unit organisation.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my apprenticeship a lot. I find my university very supportive and my studies very engaging. I am really supported at work and able to work on my development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to use the programming language, R. I have learnt Excel skills, through studies and work. I have gained skills on economic appraisal and quality assurance. I have developed my organisation and presentation skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The university organisation is very good. Follows curriculum calendar sent before the academic year begins. Enough time to complete work and good engagement from lecturers via online webinars and lectures. The year commences with a residential week and contains 3 face-to-face sessions per year. Drop in sessions to ask additional questions.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I am in a very supportive division at work. I have great support from my unit and team. I have a task manager and line manager to support me. I work in London so have many helpful and friendly colleagues that are always happy to help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There are online study materials. We receive advise to help with assessments. There are weekly drop-in sessions for apprentices of all cohorts. We can email our teachers directly and use online forums. We can ask questions at the weekly online seminars. The University of Kent also allow us to have access to other online materials - textbooks, economic newspaper subscriptions, mental health services, etc.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The degree is designed to include a more applied focus. It has been helpful and applicable to my role. Our lecturers keep in mind that many of us work us analysts in the Government Economic Service so use relevant examples.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, the GES is great at having events! I have attended the GES Conference. I have attended many away days. There are a lot of networks to join. At work, we have had many socials. I am in the L&D Group at work.
