Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a Plant Supervisor on a concrete plant, I batch concrete to the required specifications from the customer. I also manage contractor on site and order materials required to produce. I also drive a loading shovel on site to fill up the aggregate bins and to load waste away onto tippers.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme is very well laid out, and gives you knowledge on health and safety, product knowledge and gives you confidence in your day to day job. The courses go quick and are interactive you are not just sat in a seat all day, which makes it more enjoyable to learn.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

During my apprenticeship, I have got a in-house ticket to drive the loading shovel, I have done many courses such are product knowledge, confined space management, Iosh working safely, management of contractors, and how to right risk assembly’s and safe systems of work. I have also been on a 3 day first aid course to become a first aider.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well organised, each time you go to the training park the day is well set up, you got lunch provided. The trainers have knowledge from working on site aswell, so it’s more realistic rather than just classroom learning. We also went out to a quarry for a look around.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My line manager is very good and will be more than happy to help answer any question I may have, he will also give me time to do my course work. The area manager also checks in on me too see how I am getting on with the course which is nice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

During the course of getting my qualifications I have on going support from a training manager who comes out to site to check that I am getting on alright and will help me with any issues I have. I also have an assessor for my NvQ who comes to site frequently to offer help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that the qualification I’m doing helps a huge amount with my job as it gives me a good understanding of the company policy’s and also understanding of health and safety law, product knowledge and many others which that I use in my day to day role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Tarmac has an in-house social page where you can find meets for activities outside of work such as yoga for example and also many different team meetings which you can connect with other people in the industry and talk about a subject. On the qualification you also meet people in similar roles.

Tarmac is a good company to work for, you get out through constant training to increase you knowledge which in turn means you are always gaining new skills and improving your current skills. The staff and managers are all helpful and willing to assist you in your job role whenever needed.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
Just to be yourself and keep a positive attitude, tarmac will give you plenty of opportunities to develop skills in both your job role and in life. All in all most people in Tarmac are friendly and will help you succeed as long as you have a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
