Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As part of my five year finance apprenticeship, I complete different placements throughout the business. I am currently in a project accounting role which involves the financial management of contracts. My main tasks are heavily based during the month-end (reporting) periods in which I generate, organise, reconcile and communicate the cost data for the previous month to the necessary stakeholders. In particular I work closely with internal and external project managers to ensure there is an effective and smooth management of the contract and that queries and issues are resolved as soon as possible.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I am content and grateful to be on the programme which supports both my academic and practical learning. There is a good mix between learning the day job and also being involved with wider activities/programmes within the business in the form of stretch assignments. In addition to this, the apprentices and teams I work with are friendly.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed on existing skills such as problem solving as I must ensure that data reconciles and if not, I must be able to identify the cause and resolve the error. I have also developed on my technological aptitude, especially with working with large spreadsheets that contain vast amount of data. I am better able to understand how data is connected through the use of different functions which has helped me with problem solving.
I have also learnt new skills such as data analysis which has allowed me to gain insights and derive meaning from cost data that is generated.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The course has a good structure to ensure that I am able to experience different areas of finance throughout the five years. Furthermore, it has a good structure to ensure my CIMA courses and exams are complete by the necessary timeframes; whilst allowing some flexibility in regards to the order I sit my exams and when.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
There is a very good support structure with multiple points of contacts! In particular my skills coach is a friendly and approachable contact who monitors and manages my experience and well being. Furthermore, placement managers take on a duty to train and support your learning during your time in their placement. There are a variety of additional support for mental health and general well being provided by BAE Systems.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Kaplan is my training provider that delivers the CIMA course. I have found them to provide excellent resources and quick support in various forms. For example, resources include; live online classes, textbooks, integrated workbooks, practice questions, flashcards, videos, mock exams and more. The support is provided by the tutor for the class as well as an ability to contact them after classes are over or contact a general tutor on the website via the chatbox.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My studies for the CIMA qualification allow me to perform better in my role as I hold greater understanding of management and financial aspects of accounting. This academic learning is easier to apply to some roles than others as many tasks are automated and carried out by systems.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a number of extracurricular activities and stretch assignments to be involved in. In particular, I have signed up to support work experience weeks, I have been a lead for a scheme called reverse mentoring and I am currently involved in planning the annual finance conference. I have also attended a Parliamentary event and an apprentice awards evening which has allowed me to connect with other BAE employees and also form external networks. In terms of social activities, I have attended Outward Bound ( a week at the lakes) and also attend social events with apprentices.

Yes
Why?
The BAE apprenticeships are well structured and provide you with the necessary skills and qualifications. There are always opportunities to progress in your career and a great support system.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
A tip I would give is to always be confident and pro-active, as the company loves these qualities in a person. Always remember, that any experience you have is still an experience, whether you believe that it applies to the role you are applying for or not. The company looks out for people who have a variety of skills, so don't undermine your experiences. Lastly, BAE Systems look at more than just your grades and qualifications, they favour and appreciate those that can balance work/study life with their personal life and hobbies.
