Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am in the engineering workshop of the college 2-3 days per week doing hands on work such as hand fitting, pipework and welding. The remaining days I study electrical engineering academics, this includes learning about three phase systems, electric motors and the operation of electrical instruments.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the free time in college as I am able to study my subjects and prepare for my exams. I also enjoy in class discussions as I am able to contribute and learn.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have greatly improved my hands on working skills, this has made me better understand engineering processes which I can apply on the yard. I have learned alot about electrical systems like how to calculate voltages in AC and DC circuits, and how electric motors and transformers operate.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I believe the academics have been handled very well as it has moved at a steady pace making it easy to keep up provided I do some work outside of the classroom. However, we finished up in the workshop very early which has left us with nothing to do on mondays and tuesdays for the past 4 weeks.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I haven't needed any support from BAE systems yet but I am very aware that I have a large backing of support systems in place incase I require it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I have received lots of support from my academic lecturers, this includes extra study and revision classes to prepare for exams, and also given plenty of time to complete reports.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I think that the knowledge of engineering processes we gained in the workshop will help us on the yard since it will make us aware of how things are made. I also think the in depth electrical engineering study will help to give me an understanding of the considerations to me made when designing systems.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
During the college october holidays we went away to fort william with the company to complete outward bound. This is a team building outdoor weekend which is designed to teach the company behaviours in a team scenario.
