Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
For the first year of the apprenticeship it is full time at ICAT studying towards Level 2 EAL in Aviation Maintenance and CAA A licence modules. College involves a combination of both theory and practical. For the second and third year time is spent on placement gaining hands on experience on Boeing’s products across the UK.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the programme - it is a fantastic opportunity to work towards qualifications relevant to aircraft maintenance as well as gaining real world experience on real aircraft. I also enjoy the other opportunities provided by Boeing such as the opportunity to become a STEM ambassador and be able to get involved in STEM talks and events.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have gained a deeper understanding in the theory behind aircraft maintenance and gained an understanding on a wider variety of airframe types. It has also allowed for me to learn and develop my skills in metal work and other fundamental skills in aircraft maintenance. We have also been given the opportunity to apply our theory to the aircraft in the ICAT hangar.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Overall the programme is very organised and having accommodation arranged for the first year and having a whole year in college rather than a day release system is a good set up. We are also given a lot of notice of next placements to be able to arrange accommodation at each of the placements.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
We are given a lot of support from Boeing with opportunities to access well being, other resources and groups within Boeing. The apprenticeship management team are also really approachable if you have any problems or require support. Additionally, we are able to access support direct with the college for the first year which is fantastic.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As mentioned above, the training provider - ICAT allow you to access all the resources available to every other student such as study and well-being support. The lecturers are also really approachable and are able to help and give advice to us. The training provider - ICAT are also in frequency contact with the apprenticeship team so everyone is up to date with what’s happening within college
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The modules that we study towards are great as they are real world qualifications that we will use within aircraft maintenance. The provide a perfect balance between gaining an understanding of the theory of aircraft maintenance which is applied to lots of examples as well as gaining lots of experience of practicals in a sheltered environments where we are able to learn.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We are able to get involved in lots of activities and events within Boeing. The majority of apprentices are STEM ambassadors through Boeing’s STEM programme and thebSTEM ambassador programme. We are also sent through various other opportunities to attend events and join resource groups and programmes within Boeing.
