Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
During college we do practical skills in the first year (hand fitting, pipe fitting, welding, fabrication, turning, etc) and academics later on. We’re also hybrid and work on site, reforming test forms to ensure they match any final design changes, locking off equipment and conducting inspections and tests, and later in the job we will be setting systems to work and taking the ship to sea for sea trials.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the programme because I feel genuinely valued and looked after by the company and management, and I find the culture in the office is really friendly.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I’ve learnt a lot of practical skills and maritime information and language that I didn’t know before.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It did take 9 months to have it confirmed how many days we’d be in college and how long the HNC would take, and sometimes it feels like different areas of the business don’t communicate well, but there are always approachable people you can speak to.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I’ve received lots of support from the business, having gone through several bereavements since starting I’ve been so impressed at the support offered to me and there are countless approachable people I know I could speak to about any concerns. I’ve never been so supported by an employer before.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The lecturers have all been very friendly and offered additional support to anyone who’s needed it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The PEO we’re doing in first year isn’t technically required as we won’t be performing a lot of the skills we’ve learned; however, I feel like it’s given me a better understanding of the equipment I’ll be working on and more confidence in my abilities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Outwardbound was fantastic and I wish it wasn’t only in 1st year, and our department has organised 2 events since I started, but otherwise extracurricular activity options haven’t really been a thing.
