Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a trainee technical information engineer this is a role working in the supportability engineering department of maritime services. My day to day is authoring manuals and maintenance planning for ships. I use many different software types and have to conform to a standard of writing. I have worked at many different placements in the technical publications department.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy my programme as I get to experience different placements. I enjoy using different programmes to carry out my work and reading different manufactures manuals. I enjoy going on ship visits and seeing many different areas of the ships internally and externally. I feel thoroughly supported by my team.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt new writing skills and how to interpret data from different platforms. I have improved my engineering knowledge. I am undertaking a marine engineering diploma to increase my base knowledge of ships and how they function. I have improved my authoring skills and adapted to identifying the important information needed for technical publications.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is very well structured. I have a set of placements which take place every two to three months. I get to choose how long or how short these programmes are. I get support from all of the people involved on a project whilst I am on a placement
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer. I do not feel that I am left in the dark about anything and I can approach anyone in BAE systems about anything. I have a lot support with my marine engineering diploma course and I am given flexibility to complete this.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a lot of support from the training provider. The course is completely remote but there is always communication from the course provider about any new modules and updates about the course. I have the ability to contact by course leader at any time of the day due to the remote learning aspect.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I find that this will be giving me a better understanding of ships and how they work. This also helps me with the engineering aspect of the technical authoring where I will need to see what parts of equipment are affected by what. It also helps me understand the terms used within the office.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes there is. I am a maritime sector local council representative for the Level 4 engineer apprentices which I do on top of my current role and qualification. There are always events going on for the apprentices and there are networking events which are available to apprentices. I have gone to 2 social events.

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are a very good company to work for and they look after their employees. I have not felt under pressure. I feel very respected in my workplace and no question is too small for any of the employees. I feel very supported by my managers and team in relation to my work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I would advise that when you apply be authentic and make sure that you read what you are going into. Speak to anyone you know who is already within BAE and go to their open evenings, these are really helpful to get a feel and get an idea of what the company is like.
