Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as an assistant management accountant. My role involves doing period end cost reviews for specific areas including the gross margins for our liquor. I also produce balance sheet reconciliations each period. I also attend both balance sheet review and period end review meetings with the financial controller and finance directors. Other tasks include answering P&L queries from our BDM’s and also process improvements.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I would say that I do enjoy the programme, I feel that I have enough time given for classroom sessions for my CIMA exams. My catch up with my skills coach could be better, I feel that these are a rigid chat where it fees more like a tick boxing exercise than anything else, I do not see any benefit of these. I do also like the accountability of the apprenticeship, having been on distance learning before this has helped me progress on quicker.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes lots. I have developed my communication skills as I have had to learn how to explain financial terms to people in non financial people. I have also developed this skill through being involved in the meeting previously noted in Q1. Since moving into a accountancy role I have also developed my professional scepticism; questioning things more and more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
For me, it has been well structured so far. However I an yet to fail an exam and can imagine if I were to struggle on an exam I may be pressured to pass it before my next classrooms for the new unit start. I have also done a level 4 apprenticeship so I do not have to attend all skills days.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
As much as I need, my line manager is always happy to give me time back for classroom sessions I have missed if it is business critical. I also have my apprenticeship as a point of discussion in all of my 1 to 1’s. The business has also put on study sessions if a particular unit is being failed frequently.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Again, as much as I have needed so far. I get my class room sessions and then I have 2 revisions days which i find are really great as they are in person sessions.
I also have access to my whole modules on an online step by step video guide and 2 mock exams.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
A lot, I am fairly new in role (almost a year now) and it has been a big change but as I have progressed through my studies my work load has become clearer and it has helped me understand some areas within an accountancy role which were maybe not as clear. For example the treatment of leases.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I do, I act as the apprenticeship support member for the finance teams, working with senior management, our apprenticeship team & training provider to find best ways of working for sign up, getting the knowledge of what an apprenticeship entails for both apprentices and their line managers. I also offer initial chats with managers or potential apprentices to see what options are available.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Green King has been my first and only company to work for since I began my career. I have always been given opportunities to progress and develop as I have asked. In more recent years I have also seen the company make effort to catch up with the current market with things such as culture in the workplace and perks such as working from home and study supports.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
Do some research on the company, as much as they have come on as a company to be more of a modern company they still lean heavily on their heritage in terms of how the company came about. No real other advice, other than be yourself and be honest but I would give that advice to anyone applying for any role.
