Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role involves various different reconciliations and adjustments to the accounts within the department I work in. At the end of the month, I analyse the actual costs and expected costs to ensure the accounts are accurate and post any adjustments if required. Mid month I complete balance sheets to recognise the balances due with any supporting evidence. These are known as balance sheets.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy learning new skills and the help that this gives me in my role at work. The studies have developed my accounting knowledge and at the end of the programme I look forward to gaining an accreditation. The apprenticeship helps structure my studies to ensure I keep on track and pass my exams in a timely manner.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
In my apprenticeship I have learned new accounting skills through my CIMA studies. I have also developed skills through additional skills days provided in the apprenticeship programme. Examples of these days so far have been team building and leadership. In my role I have gained efficiencies and greater understanding of the correct accounting treatments in a very large company.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is structured well in that I can fit the studies and tutoring around my work. The courses are spread out well in that there isn’t too much time in between each exam but enough time for me to fully understand the topic and get an exam in before the next module starts.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer ensures that I get the time off to attend study days and pays for the exams and subscriptions. My manager is supportive of the studies and is flexible in when I take time out to complete study and exams as long as I ensure that my day to day work is completed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
First intuition are helpful when any questions have been asked and the tutors seem knowledgeable and helpful in the lessons. They structure the course well and the materials seem of good quality. When I have requested additional materials for more challenging subjects, they have been helpful in providing these quickly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I learn the detail behind the accounting I need for my role. This also helps me further understand the correct way of doing things, and helps with understanding of tasks completed by other teams within the organisation. This also helps further my knowledge and works towards a qualification required for my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are various different working groups for different segments within the company. There are regular team building events and get togethers. I have been with the company for a year and a half and have been on 3 different sporting events, numerous work events with a social aspect and it really supports the team environment and ethos.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I really enjoy the team I work with, and the wider shared service team that I work in is also good. There are various team events as previously mentioned and the support network is good. The company seems to care about its staff and I enjoy coming to work on the whole.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
The team in the financial shared service is a really good one with a lot of good people. Although the work can be challenging and time pressured, in my team at least there is a good understanding and willingness to help each other. There are numerous social activities worth getting involved with.
