Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role is to aid the build team by finding way to make the overall process of shipbuilding more cost and time efficient and general improvements within the business
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Overall first has been great the blend of work and college works really well as manufacturing is something that you learn more on site spending time with the more senior engineers but the college side lets me work with some of the other apprentices in my year

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I’ve had the opportunity to develop my communication skills between multiple disciplines within the business to work towards a common goal and had time to develop my practical skills at college

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Considering my department has only been taking apprentices for 2 years it’s very well structured and the heads of the department have monthly meeting for us to share our thoughts so if there’s anything we think can be done better they take it on board
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Personally I don’t need much support but the few times I’ve had to reach out for assistance everyone has been helpful.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The college have been outstanding, I studied there previously so I already knew it would be at a high standard but for apprentices they go above and beyond. Our college team have been fantastic with us no bad reports for anyone
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Currently we have only completed a PEO in general engineering so right now it isn’t the most relevant but despite this is has been a good introduction to what the different trades will be doing day to day which is good for me as I’ll be working with a wide range of trades so have a good basic understanding will help a lot
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
At current they’re haven’t been any events I can attend but there are events planned later though out the year I will be able to attend

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It’s world class training, the business put a lot of money, time, and effort into developing us to be the best we can be and they’re pretty flexible when it comes to helping you with any of your needs. The other major benefit I can think of is the huge workforce who have been in this industry for years and if you make the most of it, they have endless knowledge you can learn from.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I’d say if your on the fence about applying, go for it.
I’ve only been there for a year but it’s amazing how much you can learn from everyone there. Even if shipbuilding is something you know little about I was in a similar position when joining but if it’s something you want to know more about and are willing to listen and ask questions it’s crazy how much you can learn in a short period of time.
