Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My day to day role consists of testing aircraft systems, such as landing gear, fuel systems or associated avionics equipment for both landing gear and fuel systems. Testing includes the development of test means, which is the method through which the testing is conducted, performing the testing, and validating requirements.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy my programme. I have formed good friendships with others in the same cohort as myself, aswell as connections with all early careers within airbus.
I enjoy the work I perform and the working environment is friendly and hospitable. The variety of experiences available keep it a fun experience.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Skills are learnt continually while on the apprenticeship, gained both at work and through the training provider, Weston College. These include coding in an array of languages and scripting software, particularly Matlab and in my case TCL. Project management skills are emphasized, particularly during second and third year modules, delivered at university.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship is well organised with good structure, however this may not be clear to us initially. The first year is delivered by Weston college with following years delivered by the university of the west of England. There is a clear allocation of time for studying and for completion of our job role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support from the employer, Airbus, is comprehensive, with multiple routes available for various situations. Early careers management ensure the smooth running of the educational side and perform regular check ins with all apprentices. Placement managers ensure that all work set is achievable and on track, and that it is realistic for both sides.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider is not as supportive as the employer, and can struggle with its communication. The support on offer is good, and some of the staff are incredibly helpful. The amount of staff time available could be improved, and communication systems between the training provider and apprentices could be improved.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification is often not directly relevant to the role i am performing, however it has provided the transferrable skills to allow me to pick up anything within my role that is required. Additionally, project management modules have become of particular use as I have developed in my role and receive more responsibility.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are lots of extra-curricular activities to get involved in. I am a member of the Generation Airbus employee resource group, which is responsible for organising and delivering social events, which include professional networking, meals and nights out and sporting activities such as football leagues and running clubs on site.

Would you recommend Airbus to a friend?
Yes
Why?
For all of the reasons listed previously, for the nature of the apprenticeship on offer (learn on the job, no student debt degree), the good pay and location of the business within an exciting city. The friendly working environment is another consideration and the opportunities to travel other sites around Europe and the world.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Airbus?
Anybody considering applying to airbus should read and understand the company values on the airbus website and ensure that thes4e align with the kind of person they are. They should also try to consider the size of the company, and where they hope to fit in within the Airbus structure, tailoring their skills to that role.
