I work at an apprentice economist, where I conduct analysis for the UK regions. I have responsibility for regional analysis within my role, where I utilise coding and excel skills.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy the programme, I like the balance between on the job experience and academic learning.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt coding and data science skills on R. I have also learnt about green book principles and economic appraisal.

The programme is reasonably organised and structured.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a great amount of support from my employer. I always get my allocated study days, at certain times during the term (when assessments are due) my employer is happy for me to take more study time in order to keep a good work life balance.

Why?
It provides a good wage for junior economists and has a large emphasis on learning and development which allows you to progress quickly. Provides good work life balance and the working culture is nice.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Government Economic Service?
Preparation is key, make sure you have understood what behaviours are needed for the role. Don't over think your interview or be scared. Your interviewer is just someone who works for GES so they are just like you. They aren't trying to catch you out.
