Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I deal with different accounts with access to a wide range of business tasks. Most repetitive tasks include forecasting premium all the way down to the bottom line and ensuring the accounts can reconcile. There’s exposure to other areas of the business focused on accounting mainly and learning different systems.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
It is a good opportunity to move around different areas of the business. There are various roles on the scheme which are changing. It is enjoyable to work in such a friendly environment which encourages growth completing professional qualifications as well as within your daily job. There’s ongoing progress on the scheme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have built on existing soft skills and hard skills. Soft skills include communication, listening and understanding. Working with different teams has increased my exposure to the business as a whole and allowed me to ask questions. Excel skills have been built on as well as the introduction to other softwares.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
My current role has allowed me to learn new things. Once I was comfortable with my day to day tasks a performance plan was put in place to take on more responsibility. I know what to expect from my current role. There is ongoing work to make the scheme more structured going forward.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
My team are very supportive of my daily role as well as supporting my work towards my professional qualifications. They always have time to help me with new tasks, set out a work plan and answer any questions. They have been supportive in working long term towards different career goals.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive adequate support. I have a personal tutor as well as an external support buddy to help with career progression and academic support. There are scheduled lectures and exam support sessions as well as job hours specifically for study. An email is provided to contact tutors outside of this for extra help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I think my qualification will provide me with greater accountancy knowledge which has helped me already in my daily role. It has improved my knowledge of how the profit and loss sheet and balance sheet works which my team have helped to translate that to the insurance world. Going forward it will be useful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Upon joining there was a networking induction week which was really helpful. It gave us an insight to different areas of the business and allowed us to meet different people across the country. This formed the start of social events collated outside of work which has brought the grads closer together.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RSA Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There is good flexibility in the workplace and the environment is friendly and welcoming. The offices are lovely and there’s a good grad community. There’s ongoing work to continuously improve the grad scheme which should look to iron out any of the problems we are currently facing at work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSA Group?
Having an insurance background isn’t necessary and will be taught on the job. Be proactive in asking questions and taking on extra tasks when comfortable. Teams are supportive in career progression. Ensure Excel skills as sufficient as they are used daily. Having some wide knowledge of the insurance industry will help when understanding the working of the business.
