Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I prepare mail, including doing special mail holds, redirections and any other orders on a day to day basis. I then go out on a van share with another worker to deliver all the mail within an allocated area and ensure the public are at the heart of the day job.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I do enjoy the job on a day to day basis, it can be stressful with time management and the pressure we carry on us, but the people and pets I have met have overall been wonderful and I’m relatively proud to be part of Royal Mail now I have started.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Whilst working at Royal Mail you learn about team work, effective planning to help with finances, you make friends with colleagues and customers and you get to know new digital skills off the handheld devices we use called p d a s to deliver parcels in the correct way each day.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It’s okay, I am however meant to get days each day to do the college side of the apprenticeship but do not have to do quite a lot at home which can definitely add to the pressure but like I say overall it’s a good programme with safety.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
You receive basic support, but we have further options available (independent charities) to support us and of course if we were really struggling managers have the options to help us recover. We also receive help if there are dangerous dogs to help ensure our safety on the job.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
I receive a lot, very regular check ins with my tutor to go over my progress and to discuss any problems I am having with the apprenticeship and the job. The tasks I am set are clear, set up well and easy to complete and submitted all over the internet.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think it does help in some aspects as it has taught me how to do more effective route planning and how to help customers, myself and the business and its finances. It teaches you well about the correct diet.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
I am not aware of any, but the colleagues are of course a team so I think occasionally the guys and girls do arrange to meet up and have a catch up, like I say I’m not aware of any official organisations to improve the social side of the job.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Royal Mail Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It’s a good company, quite stressful but can be managed. The people you meet are lovely and you really do form a family with all the staff there and of course you change the lives of the people you deliver to in positive ways, looking after people and helping them out.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Royal Mail Group?
Get some good insoles for your shoes, seriously though it’s very good to do and can be quite a chilled job walking around all day in the sun meeting the customers. You really do grow with the customers you meet and get to know them, just go for it, enjoy yourself and apply.
