Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The insight was split into two days - one concerning global markets and one concerning investment banking, investment & treasury services, and wealth management. We met technology experts from these fields to gain an insight into how STEM skills are utilised across an investment banking environment and how STEM professionals collaborate to meet the needs of the business. We also completed a case study, competed in a trading game and attended an Investment Banking 101 introductory course.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was great to hear from such senior people such as the Managing Director of Flow Rates Trading and the Head of Syndicated Finance (to take two examples). Learning about specific accomplishments and the skills the different desks utilised to achieve them was extremely helpful in understanding how we would fit in to the business as employees and also helped in making a decision regarding where my interests lie.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I definitely learnt more technical skills concerning different divisions - for example different types of valuation metrics in regards to IBD, and what the Money Markets are in regards to Global Markets. In terms of professional skills I definitely learnt how to better construct questions to seniors. I know the saying is there's no such thing as silly questions but (having asked some in my time) I can definitely say there is!

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I thought that RBC’s emphasis on collaboration was really encouraging as someone coming from a STEM background. I think for students like us with no ties in IB, from the outside, our understanding of the work environment can sometimes be skewed. I really liked the blunt statement that RBC have a no-jerk policy and have an emphasis on the 'We' rather than the 'I'.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed it. I also liked the way questions were handled. The team made an emphasis to make the insight interactive and all the speakers were very open to hearing all our questions which was encouraging.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Royal Bank of Canada
I would say to make sure you research as much about the company as you can and try to find out what they do differently to their competitors. RBC does compete with the Bulge-Bracket Banks but it also competes with a plethora of other firms, so I'd say really try to understand where they sit in the market so you can better illustrate why you resonate with their Business Strategy in particular.
