Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role within BAE Systems is a Detail Designer. This involves me using 3D modelling software to implement changes and create 3D elements within a Naval Ship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

My programme after my college year was difficult due to COVID, however we received a lot of support and were looked after under the circumstances. Once we were back on site, the programme was able to fully kick off which was a lot better.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

My weakest skill when entering the business was communication. I had poor confidence speaking out, however with tasks I have worked on and the support within the business, my confidence is extremely better and I am more confident in myself.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Other than the difficulties experienced due to COVID, the programme was very well organised. It was structured in a way that an apprentice will be able to experience multiple different roles and tasks. This meant you are able to get a taste of everything before deciding what you want to specialise in.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The employer and all other members within the business have a lot of time for their apprentices. They provide as much support as they possibly can. They have 24/7 call lines for any type of support, mental health, financial.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider put in place a quarterly review with all their apprentices. This means they can monitor the development of the individuals and provide support if there are any issues with development.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification I felt was difficult to interpret due to a lot of the criteria relating to those who work on the ship or in fabrication shops. I believe the SVQ should be more structured.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are a lot of social events that go on around the yard. We have had tours of the ship, sports days, ceremonies, tea and coffee meets, projects etc. There are a lot of activities that people can get involved in.

Why?
BAE Systems unlike other apprenticeships provide you with all the qualifications and knowledge required to be a detail designer whilst also being paid a salary that increases each year of the apprenticeship until completion.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
If you are lucky enough to get to the interviewing stages, do your best to be yourself and not be a robot reading from a script, I did not believe I had what it took to get the job, but I was honest and committed which I believe got me the role.
