Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role as a network engineer requires me to configure, test, and troubleshoot a network. Using various devices such as routers, switches, VoIP phones, etc. My role requires me to work with a team of engineers to rollout different releases every year with multiple testing phases throughout. There is a lot to learn and it keeps me engaged.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme to its highest level. There are some administration issues now and then but it is always minor and is solved quickly. I like the flexibility given to apprentices when moving around the business and the variety of different placements that the business has to offer.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed better time keeping skills, this is really important as there are constant deadlines for different phases of the programme. I have also developed my academic writing skills whilst at university. My interpersonal skills have been enhanced by leading projects and engaging with various levels of engineers and managers.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme has been running for a while and it is a mature programme. It has a clear structure and works well. The flow of the programme is known by all apprentices, even with its minor differences between year groups. The programme is constantly undergoing development to ensure the best experience for those involved.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer is very flexible when it comes to university studies and deadlines. They are also supportive within the workplace and workload. There are many supportive programmes for mental and physical health if you wish to use them. Additionally, the university has support in place if you require help with your studies or time management.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The training provider is a university and they have many support programmes for normal students which apprenticeship students can access. Support programmes include, time management, one to one tutorials, end point assessment help, and the help of the lecturers at any time. They are a little less understanding that you also work 4 days a week which can be a challenge.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that the qualification supports my knowledge gained in the workplace, not the other way around. I feel that I have learnt more from the workplace than at university and on occasion I have had to correct my lecturers. I think that the degree from the university is a tick in the box and the real knowledge comes from the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are always events to get involved with at work, currently I am engaged with a mentoring programme, as well as early careers STEM events. The apprentices run a council for the area which organise socials such as karaoke, sports events and other social activities. There is always opportunity to start a new extra-curricular activity if you wish to.

Why?
The opportunities form the company are endless. This apprenticeship allows you to get out as much as you put into it. The additional benefit of having security clearance and the brand of BAE Systems on your CV will help you in the future. Also, the support from the company allows you to achieve your true potential.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Ensure you understand which course you are applying for, research the company and its values. Understand the types of products we have. Think of ways to show you have met the various BAE core values and be able to explain them in the interview. Take an interest in developing IT and engineering processes.
