Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
On a day to day basis I arrive at the skills and development centre where I spend 8 hours a day learning the theory of electrical engineering, maths and business. I take exams on these. I also learn the practical side of electrical fitting as well as bench fitting and using tools and equipment.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the program very much. It is a varied work load and I am learning lots of new skills. We also got to spend a week in the lake district doing team bonding, which I enjoyed. Before working at BAE I had not done anything mechanical but I am quickly learning.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt a lot of new maths which I hadn't done since school. It was a good memory refresher. I have learned to use lots of different tools as well as wire up electrical circuits including; ring mains and lighting circuits. I have developed my presentation skills too.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is very well structured. We generally have 2 weeks to learn and revise a topic before taking an exam at the end of the 2 weeks. I can see what I will be doing over the course of the apprenticeship. There are plenty of trainers who I can ask for help.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive lots of support from my employer. I have plenty of time to achieve my goals and the structure is there to assist me with any issues. there is a good HR team which help with any issues at all. I have had a few hospital appointments this year which BAE has supported me with.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my training provider. The trainers are all very experienced and know what they are doing. They can answer any questions that I might have. If they notice that I am struggling then they take the time to guide me through the process making sure that I understand.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I think that the qualification will help me perform much better in my role. It is nice to spend plenty of time in the skills and development centre before going out into the business because it makes me feel confident that I can go out there and do a good job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
there are lots of extra curricular activities that I can get involved with at work. there are plenty of social gatherings and networking events. Additionally I have the opportunity to visit local schools and events representing BAE systems, where I discuss the role with potential new recruits to give them advice on the role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend BAE systems to a friend because in the short time that I have been here I feel like I have fit in well and I enjoy the varied workload. I have learned a lot of valuable skills such as using power tools and equipment. i can see clearly where the career progressions are.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I would advise people applying to BAE to thoroughly research the company to get an idea of which role would suit them. They might be more hands on and enjoy taking things apart so therefore a mechanical apprenticeship may suit them. Or they may be office problem solvers, in which case business admin role may be more suitable.
