Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

In essence I do a lot of the testing for my company. I work in R&D and so we make lots of new things to see if we can make things run better on plant and it's my job to do testing on things such as vicosity and solubilty.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really quite enjoy my programme. I think apprenticeships are the way to go after finishing school as it provides the same level of education as going to university full time but I haven't had to pay for it and instead I am getting paid whilst I am learning
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learned quite a few new skills some of which include lab safety practices. i am now aware of how I should handle cleaning spillages and how to properly handle hazardous chemicals. I have developed my team working and communication skills as I am now much more able to speak to others and able to ask for help and also giving help when asked
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I would say that my programme is really well structured and organised. My University work is delivered entirely online and I can complete it at my own leisure within the set deadlines and the training provided by my company has been great so far. It hasn't been too convoluted and they really helped me to understand the basics of what to the company does and my role as a part of it
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer. We have to have one full day of university work a week and if necessary they allow us to do it from home so we can work without distractions. They also are often eager to help if there is issues and if there is something I don't understand regarding my university work
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

They provide a lot of support. The university does several extra skills workshops that if you needed help with you can attend. There is also a few services provided by the university such as you can send in a draft report and ask for some help with it whether it needs spell checking or just to see if you can phrase it better
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

After completing the chemical degree, I think it will help significantly because it will mean I am more able to understand what the different chemicals will do and how the processes properly work which will help me in R&D as then i will be able to make better judgements when making the sample to test
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there are several different networks at Solenis some of which include WINS ( women in solenis), sports and social club and the andymans club. Also, as of recently there is a young persons network which was created by the apprentices for the apprentices which was made so that we could all help each other and so we could network more with different areas of the business

Would you recommend Solenis to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think Solenis is a great company not only because of their great handling of the apprentices and their learning but also because they have many connections to the local surrounding area and often have collections and other fundraising events to support their neighbours and I think it is great to be a part of that
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Solenis?
Research the company so you understand its history and values to see if it is right for you. Tailor you application to a chemical company and when applying make sure your relevant skills are clear and highlighted. A lot of the workers have strong personalities so try your best to do the same whilst also remaining professional
