Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am currently in a software engineering role within the bank. In the begining I was getting to grips with the internal applications my team develops and understanding how these applications affect different users. More recently I have been coding in python to contribute to the applications my team has developed.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy this programme, most of the time is spent on practical tasks rather than theory. Although the theory learnt at university is able to demonstrate what you can expect from doing different roles within technology which definately broadens your view on roles you can take on and in turn what skills you can get out of the programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
At work, I have learnt about Linux and UNIX and developed my python skills. Through university I have been able to learn about different roles within technology e.g. business analysts and product managers. I have developed skills in SQL and learnt about the differnt tools/ processes each role requires.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
As an apprentice, your time is split 80% on the job and 20% learning. At university, everything is definately well structured and it is easy to find out what is expected during different modules by looking at the University of Exeter's website. At work, the teams organised at the begining would stay consistent unless you ask to shadow someone on another team for two weeks.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The employer makes sure a lot of people are put in place to support apprentices, these people include line managers, collegues but also a HR team for the apprenticeship programme, career mentors and university buddies. Apprentices can also request access for learn platforms like coursera and pluralsight to suppliment your learning and build your skills.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The university gives apprentices a university mentor who can help or direct you to resources. Lecturers are equally as welcoming and able to provide support through email. If help is needed for more technical modules, lecturers would provide a drop in session where you can ask questions or request help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Some of the hard skills taught in modules might not be applicable to my current role however the soft skills learnt are transferable. Also if I were to change roles then I would be able to use more of the hard skills I have learnt and the university modules can help you find a role you are interested in more. The software development module in particular has helped reinforce different programming consepts and reminded me of different programming standards that help others understand your code more.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are a lot of events held like networking events by the junior talent team. There are volunteering opportunities for things like work experience weeks and other causes. UBS has a lot of clubs and societies for sports, hobbies and personal identities. Week long events like digital week are held where guest speakers are invited.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Everyone I have met has been welcoming and encouraging, lots of people are willing to help and answer any questions. As a result, the people working here are invested in your development and heavily encourage you to grow your skillset. The work is challenging so a lot can be learnt in a short amount of time.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS?
1. Research the type of technology role you want to have and make that clear in the application/ interviewing process.
2. Take each stage of the application process as a learning opportunity.
3. Treat interviews as a conversation instead of an interagation (the interviewer is rooting for your success) and be prepared with thought out questions for the end of the interview.
