Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Phone calls with people from my assigned team where I asked questions and had general discussions about their jobs. Joined meetings and calls and often had to do write-ups/summaries of the content. Worked on projects that were set by my managers which were related to their role.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was not given a great deal of responsibility, but I was given trust as I spent some time on phone calls with clients of my managers. The difficulty with a virtual internship is you absorb less from your surroundings and the people working along side you so your learning curve, although steep, is patchy.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I developed my people skills as there was a lot of interaction in a professional setting, although the majority of the internship was virtual. I developed my technical skills on excel and technical knowledge of financial products and terms. I developed my presentation skills and many of my projects had to be presented to my managers and assessors. Finally, I learnt how to use Bloomberg with accuracy to find the information I needed.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I receive a lot of support and guidance from my managers and the HR department when I wanted to alter my desk assignments or prolong them. There was a lot of understanding that it was hard to perform well virtually so we were given guidance on how to accentuate out skills and strengths.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
A very inclusive and kind atmosphere for such a high-paced environment. I felt comfortable when on video calls with people of all seniority levels and even more so when in person for the final week of the internship. Within the teams it is often difficult to tell the ranking of each employee as there is very little hierarchy and no rudeness although huge amounts of respect.

What advice would you give to others applying to Royal Bank of Canada
Be yourself as there is such an inclusive culture there is no need to pretend. Don't lie about what you know as they do not judge you on your knowledge level at the end, but instead how your knowledge has evolved/grown over the period. Don't be worried if people don't answer your alls or emails as it's a very busy environment. Take advantage of the opportunity, ask lots of questions and speak to everyone on your teams.
