Aircraft Maintenance Apprentice Review

First year during the apprenticeship is all theory based in ICAT. During this period all A-license exams are sat for. Once the theory work in completed, we transition into On the job training. This allows the apprentices to develop their hand skills and knowledge on the aircraft. On the Job training is for 6 months 3 rotation, having your 4th rotation being where you want to be based for full time employment. I am currently based in Middle Wallop working on the Apache E model, doing my 3rd rotation. My day to day involves, keeping the Apache's maintained for the British Army. Maintenance work involves, replenishment of the system (hydraulics), changing components due to wear and tear and ensuring the aircraft is airworthy for flight.

The first year of the apprenticeship was a working process. We had a timetable given based on when we were sitting out exams but this was changed based on circumstances. It well coummunicated at times when the timetable has been changed but there were times when we found out late. However, the structure of the programme in terms of theory and practical (OJT) is well structured.

The support given from Boeing has been immaculate. They are also there to provide for support both in work and out of work. Our apprenticeship manager is always there for a helping hand and is constantly checking up on our well-being. They provide an EAP programme where you're able to talk to someone anonymously if you're comfitable talking to someone from work.

My training provider is ALS. Personally I have received support when needed. Even though they are there to provide support with my NVQ, my accessor has gone out of his way to schedule in meetings so he can help me with up coming exams. He also provided us with additional materials we could use for exams.

Completing my NVQ has better developed my knowledge when working with aircrafts. It allows me to do extra learning out of work and helps me understand the different systems that the aircrafts have. This supports me when I completing tasks. I have the general knowledge of health and safety and the importance of carrying out procedures.

Boeing has provided the support, opportunity and careers which was promised when starting the job. There are many opportunities to take after I finish the apprenticeship both locally and internationally. This gives me the hope that the work I put in, will benefit me in the long run. I would recommend this to friends.
