Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an aircraft maintenance apprentice working for Boeing. I work on both their commercial and defence programmes. This involves carrying out scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on military and commercial aircraft. Some of the aircraft I have worked on are; 737-800, C-17 Globemaster III and Apache AH-64 E. I am currently based at Army Aviation Centre Middle Wallop and each day I service a fleet of 9 aircraft so that they are available for use by the customer (UK MOD)
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy my programme. Each day I am excited to go to work and it feels like I am getting paid to do my hobby! I enjoy the challenge and problem solving that comes with aircraft maintenance. I have a huge sense of pride to work on military aircraft as I know that these play a huge role in protecting our nation and also carry out humanitarian missions.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills whilst working at Boeing. I have been able to develop my handskills and engineering knowledge as well as understanding the importance of aircraft maintenance. I also developed my understanding of LEAN principles throughout projects that I have took part in. I have also developed my softer skills such as teamwork, confidence and public speaking.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is very well organised. During the programme I change my work location every 6 months and the transition is always smooth and stress free. We are given clear goals to work towards and have a guided plan throughout. We also work to a well-planned timetable when completing qualifications.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
We receive amazing support from our employer. Our apprentice manager helps us on every step of the journey and is always available if we need her. The company also has an employee assistance programme as well as many other support functions that we are able to tap into as an apprentice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Our support from the training provider (ALS) is good. We have a dedicated NVQ assessor who visits us once a month to go through our work and ensure that we are happy with what we are doing. We are also able to reach out and contact them at any time and can arrange meeting with them if needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
During the apprenticeship we get several qualifications. These include a Level 2, City and Guilds certificate and NVQ Level 3 in aircraft maintenance. As well as all of our CAA A License modules. These really help get an overall understanding of aircraft maintenance and support the work that we do during on the job training.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many extracurricular activities that we are able to participate in. Boeing has many resource groups that we are able to join and participate in. We are also able to become a STEM ambassador and promote STEM at several events in the local community. Annually, we attend the company apprentice awards where we network with senior leadership and celebrate our achievements.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Boeing UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I believe the apprenticeship is the best in the UK for aircraft maintenance. This gives you a great entry into the industry. I think it is the only one in the UK where you get to work on commercial and military aircraft. Also, who doesn't want to work for the world's largest aerospace company?
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Boeing UK?
Have a CV that is between 1-2 pages long. Make sure you have things on there that set you out from the crowd such as hobbies, interests and things that you enjoy doing. Most importantly, be yourself, have passion and show an interest in the company and what they do.
