Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Serving customers, picking orders, problem solving, cleaning the shop and warehouse, stock rotation, catalogue launch prep, stock checking, receiving delivery and putting it away, training new starters, health and safety reviews, risk assessments, team briefings, sorting clearance stock out, ordering stock in for customers via EPOS, banking cash, checking stock moves.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have always enjoyed learning and like being able to learn on the go. I have now achieved 2 distinctions with Toolstation/Travis Perkins which is fantastic and shows that the company really wants their staff to progress and flourish. My apprenticeship coach has been absolutely fantastic as well and I feel I have a great connection with someone who doesn't work in my branch.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes- I have learnt how to deal with difficult conversations with customers and colleagues. Before my course I didn't like to get into any difficult conversations with other members of staff or customers but I now have the skills to deal with this.
I can also delegate tasks a lot easier to my colleagues by looking at their strengths and which person is in the store at the time.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
It is organised. You have 12 months to complete 10 modules and after that you have around 3 months to complete your EPA. You are given so much of your work time to complete some work. You have a webinar for each module and then lots of tasks to do before you complete the module.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer gives me time to do my work during my working hours. We extended my breaks so I did an extra 15 minutes everyday so I could get my work done. My manager has been really supportive and has also been on a course so it was great to be able to talk to someone regarding the work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
If I needed to ask a question about anything I would email my mentor to get help. He would then ring me if he was available. If he wasn't available we would organise a time and date of when we would have a chat and explanation of what I needed to do. I received loads of support and am really happy with my apprenticeship mentor [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]! :)
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It helps me perform better in my role as a manager as I have now learnt all sorts of new and different ways to be a better manager. This is especially how to sort out my team out to get tasks done and become more productive. I also feel I have become more knowledgeable in the products we sell which is a HUGE bonus.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We have different networks you can get involved with. I am part of the Proud LGBTQ+ network which is where we want to make a difference to colleagues who are part of the LGBTQ+ community and to make them feel they belong (like myself). Managers tend to attend events as well to do with products and the business.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Travis Perkins plc to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have been with TP/Toolstation for 5 years now and I have already received two qualifications through them. The pay is good and the way you can progress within the company is fantastic. I started out as customer service representative and now I am an assistant manager of the store.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Travis Perkins plc?
You must have some knowledge on basic DIY and trade products as this will help you in the long run. If you want to progress within a company this is the company for you and they are very supportive. You must be diverse and accept all qualities of life as well due to us being a very diverse company.
