Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a mechelec fitter on small boats. My day consists of refitting rhibs for the royal navy. This includes servicing and refitting the mechanical systems such as the engine and the water jet. I also service and change any electrical parts on the vessel. I am also responsible for ensuring the boat is worthy for sea after all work has been completed.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my program as i have been given the freedom to make mistakes and learn in a world wide manufacturing company. I would recommend this program to anyone who has similar interest as me in engineering. There are places the apprenticeship can improve on but all in all i enjoy it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
During my apprentice i have not only developed many new skills but i have also gained lots of "on the job" experience. With skills and experience combined together i feel confident in my own ability to tackle any aspect of refit. This includes challenging tasks such as fault finding mechanically and electrically on my own.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
I feel the organisation of this program can be improved massively. On the bookwork side, we finished everything so early before we went out on placement and found ourselves doing pointless tasks or even nothing for a large portion of the first year. On top of this, they added loads onto our apprenticeship when they realised we weren't going to make specification.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
i do receive a good mount of support from my employer. I feel like i can go to my boss for anything either bookwork related or work related and he will always try and help me solve the issue i am facing. We have regular meeting where we discuss any issues.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive enough support from my trainer in order to pass my qualification. I could always go to him for help and he would help me through the specification so i would have a better idea of what i could write. All in all i am happy with the support received,
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
1/5
the electrical training i received from my training provider was completely pointless. I am working on small boats and the training i was given was on domestic circuits and PAT testing. i have yet to use something i have learnt from that course in my day today job on small boats.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
unfortunately there are no extra curricular activities organised my my boss where i work. it is a real shame because we have a great team where everyone gets along so i think some social activities or sports would go down really well. I was very disappointed to find out there wasn't even a 5aside team at small boats.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have learnt lots of new skills, been working on boats in the workshop and at sea. i have earned a nice wage at the same time with other benefits such as shares and a good pension. I have made lots of friends i also see a future here with a career path.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Make sure you can prove you like working with your hands. A small home project or school project. Show an interest in the company, learnt the products we produce and be able to talk about them. Make sure you have maths and english and revise for the tests if you need to ,
