Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

The role varies, but generally includes various types of statistical and economic analysis with the aim of improving the way ONS measures key economic statistics. This could include programming, reading into and developing methodologies, presenting economic analysis to key stakeholders, and developing my personal knowledge of the statistical methods used in measuring the economy.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I throughly enjoy the programme, as it is something that I have a personal interest in, and it provides me with excellent opportunities to apply the skills I enjoy in a practical working environment. I have good opportunities to network, and to work in roles I would otherwise have the chance to.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have developed a number of new skills. Having previously studied economics at A-Level, this degree has provided me with the opportunity to put a number of these skills into pracitice, as well as further developing my analytical and economic education. The opportunity to utilise these skills in a practical sense has granted me increased confidence in working as an economist.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is overall well structured. Apprentices are granted 20% of the working week (in practice this is taken as one day each week) to study their degree. I also utilise some of my own time each week to make sure I remain on track with my work. The university also provides weekly virtual webinars and multiple face-to-face teaching sessions throughout the year.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Fortunately my employer is very supportive with the work I have to do to complete my apprenticeship. They consistently honour the 20% allocation for the degree, and are also understanding in times where I may require an 'extra' study day, such as when I have a difficult exam coming up.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support offered by the University of Kent is excellent. There are weekly lectures and webinars to complete and attend, with the opportunity for one on one tutoring or assistance from module convenors when needed. A personal 'training coach' is also assigned to each apprentice, giving them the opportunity for more personal targetted support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The roles I have been in have all benefitted from the training provided within the apprenticeship. Economics itself is a thoroughly numerate subject, and the analytical skills learned throughout each of the modules translate well into the work I complete on a daily basis. I am able to see the practical application of my learning, which in itself is motivating.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is a fair offering of extra curricular activities within the Office for National Statistics. I have had the opportunity to network with felow colleagues and economists, and have also been able to join the office football team, which plays each week. Considering the virtual nature of our work, ONS certainly does offer extra curricular activities.

Why?
The Office for National Statistics offers a forward-thinking and exciting way of operating, with a wide variety of interesting work. There is a positive hybrid working culture, and the work the Office does contributes massively to the daily lives of people living in the UK. It also provides a great opportunity to expose yourself to the work that is being completed in the public sector.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Government Economic Service?
Ensure you are open minded and find the work you will complete interesting. Working at the Office For National Statistics has been beneficial for my career, and I would encourage people to network outside of their teams and take as many extra curricular opportunities as possible, which is massively beneficial for professional development.
