Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is currently based around developing Power BI dashboards and Python applications, creating models and visualisations based on the needs of individuals and teams within R&D.
There is no typical day but most days involve some aspect of following up emails, a couple of meetings and either refreshing, updating or building functionality within a PowerBI or Python app/model.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

My program has been enjoyable, if a little intense at times. Within the workplace I have had full support from my team, line manager and stakeholders when university deadlines needed to take priority. However, the university hasn't had the best quality teaching or structure, so this has added extra, unnecessary difficulty.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I've had the chance to significantly develop my Python skills, alongside developing an understanding of PowerBI (and DAX), SQL and the general Azure ecosystem combined with Databricks.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Unilever have done well on their part to structure the program, although improvements could be made such as allowing rotations through different teams to get a broader picture.
Additionally, similar to my other comments, the university has struggled for structure and at times neglected proper communication with Unilever, causing a disconnect in structure.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I am thoroughly supported within Unilever. All the way from my team and line manager up to the wider apprenticeship and future careers teams.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
York St John University provide weekly lectures, in which I am provided a day off to study from Unilever. However, these lectures are limited and often rushed due to how little time is allocated. 3 hours for approximately 10 weeks is not sufficient time to learn content and a University level.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Whilst the link is there, I feel that the most useful content is content I already knew and some of the more interesting theoretical content has little application within the workplace. My best learnings have been when I needed to learn or understand a framework to complete a project and improve in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there are wider social activities for apprentices as well as more local ones. Additionally, the site I work at has a limited range of sports teams we can join.

Why?
Unilever has been a very supportive company and the culture of supporting apprentices and nuturing talent feels like it stems from the top.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
Don't worry about being perfect, just be willing to see the fun side of things, whilst being serious when you need to. Don't take yourself so seriously that you won't own up to your mistakes. Make the mistakes, admit them and improve. You'll be supported and appreciated.
