Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The role involved working within a specific area of the National Grid in order to help accomplish a task required by the sub-team. This involved working within a team to complete objectives in a timely and efficient manner, whilst also getting involved in the overall company - e.g. learning about the company goals, company values but also learning how different aspects of the company are linked to one another
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Absolutely. I was given a personal unique project in which the end product could be used to aid company investment.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
From the placement, I have gained alot of additional skills! It has furthered my knowledge of the electrical engineering field and I have improved my background knowledge in certain topic areas. Beside the technical, I have also improved other transferable skills to aid my personal development such as presentation, time management and saftey skills.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received as much support as I needed. Coming in with little experience in the project area, guidance was given by my line manager as to what I should be researching and ultimately the wider purpose of the task. Outwith the project, there was consistent support from HR to ensure that I was achieving what I wanted to achieve during my placement.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The National Grid is a very inclusive, friendly company. They consistenly run events which you can attend in order to meet other new starters within the organisation whilst also gaining more knowledge about what the National Grid sets out to achieve.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
The placement was an enjoyably experience. The inclusive culture means that you can easily settle in amongst your subteam and actually feel like you are making an impact. Furthermore, it has allowed me to develop my knowledge in areas which could be fundamental for my future career. However, due to COVID-19 there were fewer opportunities to have site/team visits which was something that would have made the placement even better!

What advice would you give to others applying to National Grid
Before reaching the assessment centre, make sure you are up to scratch with what is going on within the industry, and what you feel could be done differently or what should be worked upon more. Knowledge isn't the be all and end all, but personal opinion is something which is very valuable and something which will ultimately help the company in a positive way.
