Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My first year has been spent studying Monday to Friday at college y cymoedd Nantgarw Cardiff. I have covered various Gas turbine related subjects and have gained practical skills in the workshop, learning to use the lathe by creating parts through turning as well as creating parts through hand fitting.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am always excited to get up and go to collage and learn with the other students on the apprenticeship, I have made new friends that will be with me throughout my career. The tutors are encouraging and enjoy a laugh with us, it's a nice relaxed atmosphere where you really feel at home.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned many new valuable skills that will help me during my role at GE Aviation. I have learned to use many different types of measuring equipment that I had never used before, I am now confident and independent when using these different measuring devices thanks to the tutors at colleg y cymoedd for their knowledge and fantastic teaching.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is very well structured, we get taught the knowledge required to complete the assignments required to pass the course. This is done over three periods throughout the year. So we do get given assignments for all subject around about the same time however, this is done in a way that provides you with enough time to complete all assignments on time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employers are supportive and often checks in to see how we are progressing. If you have any personal issues at all they are there to listen and provide some guidance, they can and will help with any issues. We have even recieved a pay rise due to the cost of living crisist.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider has taught me everything that I have need to know to be able to complete all assignments with some additional independent research. Whenever I am unsure about anything my training providers are always happy to sit and go over anything and point me in the right direction.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification will provide me with all the knowledge to be able to perform better withing my role at GE. I have also gained the theory needed to understand why things are made with certain materials, why parts cost so much and how they work. I have the knowledge to better understand my role within the company.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes I do believe that there are social activities that I am able to get involved in however, I have not done so yet. There is a good rugby team at GE Nantgarw that anyone can join although that's not something that I personally would be interested in doing.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?
Yes
Why?
GE Aviation is a nice friendly environment to work in, you are able to progress throughout the industry and can even take up opportunities outside of the UK. I have always felt a part of GE and have gained life long friendships that I value. Everybody is always willing to help.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
Do some research first. Look into the background of GE, why they are there and what they do. Try to get an understanding of the different job roles. Go along to job fairs and speak to GE members when they are there giving information about the apprenticeship. Also try to get some qork experience at GE, that way you will have an understanding of the processes.
