Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
To maintain RAF aircraft to ensure flight safety and correct functionality. Day to day involves studying for Cat A EASA exam modules and completing practical phases to increase your overall competencey. This element is completed at the aircraft maintenance academy after which you move onto the NVQ element at a live maintenance location.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I very much enjoyed the programme, it challenged me in many ways but on completion I have a great sense of achievement. Being able to have on aircraft practical experience I feel has prepared me for entering a live maintenance environment, this is something not achievable only in the classroom.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt many new skills and developed on existing experience. Much of the skills required for this position are unlike any others in any other industry making this an interesting but challenging course. Many of the skills I have gained I will keep with me for life and I'm sure will help outside of work.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
While the organisation of the programme could be improved I think they did a good job given the challenges presented by running a course throughout the covid 19 pandemic. I always felt like I could raise any issue with the structure with management and that these issues would be resolved if possible.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I felt well supported throughout, I had many good conversations with management. At no point did I feel like I could not raise concerns or questions. I felt that if at any point I needed extra support I only needed to speak to any of the managers and this would be resolved.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The instructors and course notes were great. While the content itself is difficult and challenging at times, I never felt like I could not ask questions. The staff are more than happy to explain things and help as much as is needed for you to stand a good chance at passing the exams.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualifications have given me the best chance at being the best aircraft maintenance engineer I can be. My understanding of aircraft has increased dramatically as well as my understanding of the various maintenance procedures and requirements to maintain airworthiness. I feel well prepared for the next phase of my career.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
As part of the apprenticeship you get the chance to go on an Outward Bounds trip where you experience many new activities. It provides an opportunity to improve team relationships and push yourself outside of your comfort zone. You get to experience things you likely would never think to do.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
If you are interested in aircraft or engineering I do believe this is one of the best courses out there. It provides the best opportunity to enter into a very competitive industry and gives you all the knowledge and experience you need to make a great start in your career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be willing to show your enthusiasm and excitement for this opportunity. While the company does want a certain level of intelligence, its not their main focus. They want the right people, people who work well in a team, who are interested and enthusiastic about the work they do and have a passion for it.
