Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is to carefully prepare and paint surfaces with specialised industrial coatings. This is done to prevent corrosion. My day to day duties currenltly include preparing test pieces for painting then applying several coatings of paint onto it. We also have to complete coursework to provide evidence of the work we are doing
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme as it gives me lots of opportunities to develop my skills within the trade. It is also varied enough to not feel too repetetive as classroom sessions and different projects give variety. The company culture is good as you feel well looked after by the company.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

My knowledge of painting was minimal when I first joined the company, however I now have a greater understanding of the importance of painting, what tools need to be used for painting and how to prepare surfaces for painting. I have also learned lots of different techniques for applying paint.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

We do a lot of practical training whcih is delivered by a skills coach, we also have a lot of opportunities to complete theory work such as assignments to provide evidence for reviews. We take part in regular 12 week reviews to check on how we are progressing within the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

We recieve a lot of support from the employer, we have a mentor with us most of the time who we can talk to if we have any issues, it is also easy to contact our line manager or the HR teams if we need to. Overall I feel like the company looks after it's employees.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I recieve a lot of support from the training provider. We are with our mentor most of the time and they often give us guidance on how to work towards our qualifications in both our theory work, evidence gathering and practical training, we take part in reviews which also discuss the next steps towards achieving our qualification.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that the qualification we are gaining is giving me an excellent understanding of the role we will be performing within the company. This is because the course is run by the company so is specially tailored to working towards the required standards within the company. The processes we are taught can also be very specific to our role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are a number of extra-curricular activities to take part in. One example is an outward bound week we took part in where we went to ullswater for a week and took part in canoeing, expeditions and absailing. This was a very enjoyable week which helped us develop our communication and teambuilidng skills.

Why?
I would recommend this company to a friend as I believe that the company is very good at supporting it's employees, I also find that the apprenticeship programme is doing a very good job at preparing us for the role we will perform within the company once we finish our apprenticeship.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I found the application process easy to understand, firstly we had to complete an aptitude test, then a video interview whcih involved recording yourself answering pre-recorded questions and finally there was a regular interview with members the company who you would later be working with. If you are successful, you will do a week induction before starting your role.
