Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

initial 6 moths consists of training in a training centre, where we learn practical skills such as household wiring, soldering, engine rebuilds and bench fitting. we are then sent on placements around different areas of the business for 3-6months at a time where we are given on the job training. during all of the we also study once a week towards our hnc.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

everything has gone smoothly and i have enjoyed my time at the company. i have found everyone very helpful when needed, and certain jobs/tasks given are very enjoyable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

i have developed many of my skills including household wiring, soldering, engine rebuilds and bench fitting. i have also learn a lot while studying about electrical circuits while at the college/uni.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I find the program fairly well laid out, my year is the first for the design engineers so as expected a few admin problems here and there, but other than that it all seems to be going smoothly.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Bae systems like you to learn on your own as much as possible, so you will be taught what to do then be given the time to try it out for yourself. however they are also always there to back up[ and support if you have any issues or struggles with what you are doing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

There has been aspects of the qualification that have been very relevant to what i am doing, and others that aren't, however i have only just started in placement so in reality i am still to wait and see.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

there are no work run sporting clubs, however some of the apprentices have started sport clubs between themselves where they meet up at weekend to enjoy their sport. as a bae systems employee you also have the option to join the united services sports teams.

the apprentice scheme is a great opportunity to get a foot into the business at a young age and develop your skills and knowledge alongside getting multiple qualifications.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be patient, the application system may take a while but is more than worth it. make sure you feel you are prepared for the role, and get all work done before the deadlines with plenty of time to spare.
