My role is a project manager degree apprentice, 1 day every week I will go to university to study project management and the other 4 days I will work in the office. I help write processes in my office and run my own project. I usually start at 6:45am and finish at 3:30pm.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy working as an apprentice in this company, you are given everyday support within the business aswell as university. If you have any worries you can always air them to your skills coaches.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt the skill leadership, this has allowed me to work alongside schools in the local area and get involved in promoting apprenticeships. It’s also lead me to develop my confidence skills.
I have also developed collaboration skills, working alongside groups in university and in work. It’s been such a educational journey.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is really well organised, you spend 5 years developing your skills, knowledge and behaviours in the business.
You can move placements and get to know new areas in the business, this will help gain more competencies.
I love how the programme is layed out, they will always try and help where they can.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive everyday support from my skills coaches and placement manager. Also apprentices from different years all help you out throughout your time as a student in the business.
You can ask anyone and receive help. We receive 12 week 1-1 reviews that help us gain more support overall, it’s really professional.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There is so much support available from university every week. We can ring them out of university time if we ever have a question relating to our studies.
There is always help provided. Even if we struggle to ask the tutors we can always ask other apprentices or our skills coaches.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification through university helps me perform better in my role as I am gaining more of an understanding towards the business and certain aspects of it.
For example, I’m learning how to use software such as excel, word and Microsoft project professional in work. This has helped me gain the experience.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are always extra curricular activities to get involved in. I have done over 300 hours worth of stretch activities now within work. This has involved me going to careers fairs, judging competitions and helping promote apprenticeships to the surrounding schools in the local area. It’s been really rewarding taking part.

Yes
Why?
Because it’s been an amazing experience, it’s so educational and worth while. There are so many different career paths bae offer to the apprentices, they help this by letting us move around in the Business and experience different areas. You can learn on the job which I have found amazing.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I would always say make sure you are applying for yourself and make sure you understand and read up on the role before taking anymore steps. You should always feel passionate about the role you have in mind, it’s a major career choice that the company is funding and helping us progress in.
