Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

my title is precision machinist apprentice. Everyday when I go into the workshop I am training to be a qualified machinist. My day to day roles are changing quite often as I am training. However, some of my roles involve filing, scraping and basic hand fitting activities. I am also fully inducted onto the pillar drills, for when it is necessary to use them.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy my apprenticeship. I am constantly learning new things and meeting new people. There is always something to be learned, so I am never bored. I enjoy learning how to use new machines and getting to use new tools in the process. This apprenticeship is very enjoyable and a good experience.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Since I have joined my apprenticeship I have learned many new skills. I have learned how to use pillar drills, i have learned how to use files and scrapers and i have even learned about different materials and properties of them. I am learning new things daily, i am getting to know people and interesting things about them.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship that I am on is very well organised. There are risk assessments that need to be done for every task. This is because health and safety is very important ant the company. There are instructors all around the workshop is you need them for any task. The programme in general is very organised and the path is very clear.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer provides a lot of support for all employees throughout the company. There is always help and support available. The human resources team are always doing their jobs. There are managers and instructors who are willing to help you whenever help is needed. In general the company is very supportive and helpful.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

When working towards our qualifications we receive good support from our tutors and advisors. support can be given quite easily. Sometimes you could simply just ask for help, or an instructor could see that you are struggling with something and offer to help. I really enjoy it because, i know that if i am ever struggling i only have to ask for help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification that I am working towards will really help me with my future career and current role. I am currently working toward a certain standard in precision machinery. This will show that I am competent (in my role) and that i am capable of working on my own with these machines.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

At my workplace there are a few extra curricular activities one could get involved in. The are charity events that are always looking for volunteers to help out. There are also safety comities that need responsible people to help keep the workshops safe foe all those that work inside of it.

Why?
Awe is a very good place for a future career. I would recommend this company to a friend, because there is such a variety of roles that are available for anyone who wants to join. It is a good place to get qualified in a specific trade that you want to do.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?
For other people applying to AWE I would say to them:
Before applying choose the trade that you want to do and a trade that you would enjoy. when going to interviews dress smartly and be forward. some jobs may require you to examine a tool or something along these lines. You should be ready for anything trade relevant on the interview. The application process can be long at times, but be patianet with it.
