Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I reported and wrote a wide range of news stories around economics, business and finance. Internship also involved working with others, for example when writing a joint byline or preparing for a press conference or event as a team (i.e. one person writes headlines, the other gets quotes etc.)
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. My editors assigned me stories straight away, and asked me that I come up and pitch them ideas so that I can produce my own work. Despite being an intern, I was treated as a reporter and expected to work as one (a lot of independent work, speed, accuracy). It was very satisfying to be given this much responsibility.

I've refined my news judgment and improved my writing and reporting skills. I would say I'm a better interviewer now than I was at the start of the summer.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Everyone I met during the internship was genuinely supportive. I was encouraged to ask questions and to email members of other teams to ask questions. For instance if I'm reporting a story on x topic, speak to the reporter who specialises in that beat, or the analyst who covers it etc. My editors and other reporters were always around offering help in case I needed it.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Really good atmosphere. Most interns were keen to get to know each other, we often met during drop-in hours or organised meetings between ourselves. The internship team also organised lots of speaker events and other activities for us to meet.

What advice would you give to others applying to Bloomberg
I would recommend that they read up on finance and business news as widely as possible. Be up to date with the global news of the day/week and try to build a solid knowledge of the economy and markets.
The most important bit I believe is to show passion for journalism and enthusiasm for every task. There's a lot to learn and Bloomberg gives you plenty of opportunities to dabble with many different topics/formats etc (this is very rare I think!).
