Software Engineering Tech Intern Review

Internship working between 2 teams - 1 team (for me, Services) - involved Java development, working on features which have real impact on customers, and collaborating closely with team members to learn skills and about the Service, and deliver good software development. 2nd team is an intern project where you work with other interns and grads on a more casual project - opportunity to explore different things, play around, have fun while learning a lot. Infrastructure, service, orchestration and Java, JS, Python possible work.

Yes! I was pleasantly surprised but how much I was respected as an intern and treated as any other member of the team. I was given real project work to do, which would deliver real value for customers, and got to deliver this all the way to production. After my first delivery, I was also given more responsibility to lead the next set of work and discussions around how to implement and deliver that work. I was given the opportunity to present my achievements to the group which my team sits within during one of their monthly meetings, which was a really nice way to demonstrate my work to others. I felt genuinely valued and comfortable at the same time.

Yes - don't have a computer science background (studied Physics and Chemistry), so whilst I had done some python programming myself and in a research context, I had never done Software Development / Software Engineering or learnt about best coding practices or industry coding.
I learnt so much, first off - Java - how to work in this language, with support of my team members who were really helpful to get me up to speed
Agile Practices (Stand-ups, Jira)
Using GitHub in an industry way - PR reviews and collaboration add another layer to using github for your own projects
Jenkins pipelines to manage delivery of code to production.
AWS infrastructure
Working interactively with others - never pair programmed before and it is really fun! Keeps things social in the remote internship

I received a lot of support and guidance, particularly at the start of the internship getting up to speed. Later on, once I felt more comfortable and confident with the work, I was still supported but I led this myself.
At the start, I didn't know Java, so a team member developed a specific basic training project and paired with me to teach me various Java concepts, which was amazing. It enabled me to pick things up really quickly with their explanations, as opposed to just watching videos or googling which is a difficult way to get started.
Members of the team also took time out to explain various aspects of the service I was working on, which helped me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the service, as well as answering any general questions I had about how things worked at Cap1 or how to install/set-up various software etc. Everyone I spoke to was really friendly and made it clear I could ask them for help about any of this stuff, which was awesome.

Everyone is really friendly and approachable, they are happy to help and will offer their support and advice. Generally people are quite relaxed and the environment is not too pressured, which is super nice. People do great work but are not expected to work all the time, and supporting others is valued by the company which creates a great atmosphere.
I got the impression that they care a lot about equity and inclusion, there are various initiatives to support diverse hiring and diverse colleagues, which is brilliant. I was again pleasantly surprised with how diverse my team was.

I really enjoyed it, I don't think I could have had a better time. There was loads of interaction with other people, opportunities to learn, and opportunities to take responsibilty and engage and be valued by the team. For a remote internship, there was a lot of chat and social interaction through the project work due to working with those 2 different teams - enabling you to socialise with interns and grads in the more casual team, which would otherwise be tricky remotely. They also gave us a reaaally comfortable free t-shirt and a cute plant!
