Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an intern you go through an initial training period that helps you become familiar with the technologies used later in the internship. After this period you become part of a small team, get assigned dev tasks and participate in daily Agile style stand-up meetings where every team member's progress is discussed. Day-to-day tasks don't necessarily consist of adding new features. Planning, testing and UI design are also included in the experience.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Even though the majority of my tasks involved adding features to an internal app, the app was created to improve the work process of one of the teams in the company and is used by the team on daily basis, so I felt quite responsible to guarantee high quality of deliverables. What's more I was briefly involved in a project which included a demo for a client which also demonstrated how much the company thrusts the interns.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Both learning new skills and developing existing ones are big parts of the internship. A degree in Software Engineering and personal projects usually give a good base skillset, but applying your skills in an industrial environment and being provided with feedback through code reviews helps you expand your knowledge and improve the quality of your work.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The work process is organised in such a way that one can always find someone to ask for help. It doesn't take much time for an intern to get to know the whole team and the responsibility of each member, so by the end of the first couple of weeks you'll know who will be most prepared to answer each one of your questions. When in doubt, you can always ask your line manager, they're there to point you in the right direction.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company has a very laid back and easy-going work environment. The office has an open plan layout and a big kitchen, so people often gather for a chat over a cup of tea/coffee or lunch. In the beginning of the internship you get introduced to all the people who organise company events and take care of the happiness of the employees and you realise how often the Ghyston team socialises outside work hours. Being at work feels more like hanging out with your friends than going to your normal 9:5 job.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
The way Ghyston's website describes the internship experience, the work process and the company atmosphere almost sounds too good to be true but the reality surpasses what's written there. I very much enjoyed being a member of a diverse team of cool and friendly people who genuinely enjoy going to work every day.

What advice would you give to others applying to Ghyston
Ghyston very much cares about the cultural fit of the employees as well as the technical skillset. Which is why the best thing you can do is just be yourself during the application process and see how you feel in the presence of the people who interview you. If you like their company, you'll definitely enjoy working at Ghyston. Also, don't stress out if you don't know something during the interview, as long as you think out loud, show curiosity and listen to the advice that more experienced people give you, everything will be okay.
