Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My day to day role as an apprentice for British Gas includes servicing and repairing boilers, fires and other gas appliances. As i am an apprentice I split my team between my patch in the north west and the centre based in Hamilton Scotland. I’m constantly learning and increasing my knowledge about the job.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am thoroughly enjoying my apprenticeship, every day I am learning something new and I am surrounded by positives influences. Wether this be my tutors or fellow apprentices. I have enjoyed living away from home and enjoying all the benefits that come with that, out of 10 I would give it a strong 9.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt lots of new skills since starting at British Gas over a year ago, these skills include Gas safety checks, diagnosis checks, Soldering, electrics, power tools, pipework and much much more. I have also built on my customer service skills I already had by going into customers houses and speaking to them about their various issues.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
This would probably be my only gripe within the apprentice scheme. Even though my tutors are very knowledgeable, there is definitely a lack of a communication between various departments. It sometimes feels that is apprentices are left to fend for ourselves. Despite this I still feel the course is very good, this would be my only room for improvement.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a wide degree of support from various people within British Gas. My fellow apprentices are constantly supporting me when I am struggling with a topic, my manager is in constant contact with me throughout the week. And my tutor is very supportive as well when he can see I am struggling.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive lots of support from the training programme, there are various tools to help us when we are struggling. Such as Ignite, GTSG, tollie manuals, tutors, managers, colleagues. If I am ever stuck with something I have various ways of finding out the correct answer and receiving great support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel our qualification via British Gas is excellent. As it is a leader provider in the industry, our training is second to none. We do a 2 year course before attempting our ACs. This is more longer than any other apprenticeship that I know of. I definitely feel better in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
At the moment there no extra curricular activities, however this is partly down due to covid as most places have been shut for a considerable amount of time. As lockdown restrictions ease I believe we are going to try and get a 5 a side game together for after work

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Centrica British Gas to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I’d recommend British Gas to a friend because the career prospects are fantastic and the pay is very competitive compared to other similar industries. The perks are very good, aswell as a good pension and bonus scheme. They provide you with all your vans and tools pretty much straight away
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Centrica British Gas?
If you’re stuck with something, just ask. No question is too silly. That’s what your mentors and colleagues are there for, there is no point being stuck and not asking the question. They will be happy to help. Also work tidy wether that be in the centre or out on patch
