Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
The day to day of my apprenticeship it split into two parts, patch work and learning centre, with block of three week on each before switching over. At the centre we learn both practical and theory skilled needed to become a gas engineer. On the patch, along with my mentor, i go into customer homes and practice these skills
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
So far, I have found my apprenticeship very enjoyable. The trainers at the centre are very experienced and have a wealth of knowledge. The mentors on patch are also extremely knowledgeable as well. Mine especially takes extra time to go through things with me and make sure I full understand.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I've learn many new skills and not just from a practical gas engineer side. I have also been taught building skill, such as brick work and plastering and plumbing skills as well. I have also improved my customer facing skills as well, speaking to customers with in their homes.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
on the whole, it has been fairly well organised and structured, especially considering we started the same time that COVID hit too. There have been some issue with some of the technologies that have been used, but they have worked hard to over come a solve these issues as they have come up.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Considering the size of the company, we have been supported fairly well. This manly comes from the trainers and the mentors that we have been given. However i do feel there is a disconnect between the apprentices and the higher management, there is no 'head of apprentices' which can make it hard to raise issues.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
we have been supported by the trainers through out the course. our trainers make sure they give us all the information we need to pass our course and will provided exra information should we want to progress further. Some of the trainer will also make sure they are aviable at weekends to help should we require it
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
With out my my qualification i Could not be able to proform my job, as its a legal qulification. However we are also trained in lots of those skills that we need for our day to day work life as well, such as customer facing and problem solving and resolution.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
unfortunately there are no extr curricular activities provided by british gas. however the hotel they put us up in does have both a gym and swimming pool, as well as large ground to walk around in. However i do feel that this is somthing that they could improve on in the future

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Centrica to a friend?
Yes
Why?
British gas as we a whole is a very good company to work for. The provide great health care and other well fare benfits as well, as well as a really good pension scheme as well. The training centres as well are well suited to provide excellent training as well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Centrica?
Make sure that you read the contract well before you sign it and you understand it fully. There are something within the contract that i wasnt fully aware of when i signed it and althought it doesnt impact me massively, it is not what i was expecting when i first signed up
