Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
2/5
as an apprentice day to day was to spend time around the day management team and try to learn the main issues around each section
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
1/5
i spent most of my time doing pointless or basic tasks because there was never anyone there to properly train me and take me through the line so majority of the time was spent on my own or looking for work

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
1/5
i developed new skills but i often felt left behind and didn’t understand a lot of the issues so couldn’t contribute, and how the line worked as most of management was office based and had previously worked the lines

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
terrible, i had a plan to visit every working area but beyond that nothing, when i’d turn up to a new section and i’d be asked ‘so what are you supposed to do when you’re here’
How much support do you receive from your employer?
1/5
the main positive was support academically to do courses was great i did a lot of qualifications, but in work not much i was given a ‘mentor’ but my concerns were never really taken seriously
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
the main goal was to gain my qualifications which i can understand and i was given time to do these in work, but on times i was out of the office for 3 days a weeks which mates work disjointed and hard to get involved
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
the manufacturing qualifications are very relatable and do help me understand some issues but without knowledge of the line of the issues it’s hard to implement
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
there were lots of events are an apprentice

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Tata Steel to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I’d recommend due to the pay and the job at the end, i wouldn’t recommend being on days as a higher apprentice it would have been better for me if i went straight onto shift to learn the process which i ended up doing after finishing
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tata Steel?
it’s nearly impossible to put someone into the business on day management teams with no experience of the line, they need to either put people on shift for the experience and do the job or release someone to fully train the person as management as too busy to train
